Greetings, my name is Tanya Kirkland, I am of Cree (Canoe Lake Cree First Nation) and English ancestry. I was born and raised on Lheidli T'enneh territory (Prince George) where I have recently moved back after 21 years away.
I counsel from an Indigenous, Person Centered, Strengths based perspective. I have a genuine interest in supporting all people and find it an honour to listen in a gentle, calm and compassionate manner meeting each person where they are at. I see people not only as individuals but also understand their deep and sometimes complex connections to family, community, culture, the land, systems and institutions. My desire is to create a safe space where people feel comfortable exploring the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of themselves as they navigate the world.
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (#16863) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (#10003027). I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from UNBC in Prince George, and a MA in Counselling Psychology with a focus on Indigenous Communities Counselling Psychology from UVic. In addition to my private practice I also work at Camosun College providing Counselling services for Indigenous and non- Indigenous students.
I look forward to working collaboratively with you to develop a personal therapy plan. The following are some specific areas that I can support you in:
